I can help you make better use of data.
This may involve database design, writing software to enhance workflow,
integrating existing systems, or any number of other possibilities. There are
many ways of going about this. There are many hardware and software
platforms that can be used to this end. We can work out those details together.
If you, your employees, or your customers are not using and sharing information
effectively, I can help.

Application Development
|
|
If you decide to build, how do you go about going it? We can build it for you,
supplement or manage your existing team, or even teach your people how to build it for
themselves. Whether it's a browser-based intranet tool, a distributed
application system (using your network and the Internet but perhaps not running in a
browser), or an old-school client/server program, you'll benefit from our expertise.

Web Presence
|
|
Let us enhance your Internet image. 3NF Consulting has a world-class artistic and design
partner who brings to our projects a wide range of experience, from Hollywood movie
posters (Time Cop and Dark Man) and production logos (Jurassic Park) to retail toys
(Godzilla) to technology (Realtor.com) web sites. With their art and our technology,
you get a great team!

Intranets and Extranets
|
|
A corporate intranet is an excellent enabling platform for distributed systems and
corporate workflow applications. Add systems integration with your external partners
and vendors via a secure extranet and you have the facility to provide data and
information throughout your enterprise.

Data Management
|
|
|
|
Data Modeling
|
|
This is the first step in turning data into information. Data by itself is meaningless.
We take facts and figures you wish to collect and imbue them with context in a
comprehensive and expressive data architecture. Data given context is information. This
transformation is enabled by our discussion of the strategic goals of your business with
executives and our learning about the operational details of day-to-day life from your
employees.
|
| |
|
Database Implementation
|
|
This is the second step in turning data into information. Given a comprehensive and
expressive data model, we will build a database and supporting systems that you can
use to harvest the new information and use it to meet your goals. The specifics of
database implementation vary for every client. Typically we build databases in Oracle,
SQL Server, Postgres, or DB2, on either Windows or Linux platforms.

|
|
|
| |
|
Great! Now you can construct useful information out of your data. What do you do with all
that information once you've gone to the trouble of synthesizing it?

Workflow
|
|
Information by itself is only moderately useful. It generally needs to flow through
your organization in order to be used effectively. Workflow applications enable the
management and flow of information from department to department and from person to
person. Workflow applications can bring about productivity gains in the tasks they
automate by facilitating a major reduction in processing delays. It's provides the
framework by which people can work together smoothly and efficiently. We design our
workflow applications to know which tasks and procedures to apply to which types of
information in order to increase throughput and reduce human error.

|
Systems Integration
|
|
You may have several systems already in place, and individually each one may be doing a
good job. But if they cannot exchange data with each other you still have the problems
of duplicate data entry, manual data consolidation, and variable cross-system data quality.
For example, if a customer changes their address and notifies your billing department,
does the shipping department find out about this before the customer calls to ask about
the whereabouts of their new order? This is where our systems integration services can
help. By applying techniques such as inter-application messaging and data cataloging
and building solutions employing tools like Web services and XML, we can link your
disparate systems to increase operational efficiency and accuracy.

New Technology
|
|
Every week brings something new into the fold of technology and your company.
How do you avoid technology obsolescence and plan for the future? What can you do
today for immediate benefit and future returns? We can help you answer those and
other questions. You don't have to go it alone.
|
| |
|
Build vs. Buy
|
|
This is a timeless question to ponder when considering new technology. We'll help you
determine the best course of action by examining the pros and cons of each. Is there
existing technology that fits your situation? How well? How much will it cost to build,
versus how much to buy? If you buy, how will you integrate it with your other systems?
And how much will that cost? We can guide you through the process.

Mobile Computing
|
|
Palm computers used to be a novelty. (I know. I had the first model back in 1995.
People on the train used to look at me funny when I used it.) Now almost everybody
has one. (And those people on the train have found other reasons to look at me
funny.) Are they integrated with your IT infrastructure? Do you leverage their
use for your operational benefit? Or are they just another support annoyance?
Today's wireless technology and modern development tools allow us to enable you to
make handheld and mobile computing work for you, not against you.

Education and Mentoring

Data Management Education
|
|
|
|
You don't have to enroll in college to see me teach. I offer customized
training and educational programs for companies of all sizes. Classes vary
from general theory topics on all areas of data management to platform- and
even problem-specific areas unique to your business.

Alan's class was one of the top courses at school. It was, and still is, practical in my
everyday life. I had been drafted to work on a major database project. I was in no way shape
or form ready to take on such a project at the time. There is only so much that can be
learned from textbook examples.
Not only did we cover the fundamentals of databases, but I was able to spend the first half of
the week at work collecting issues and problems that I came across, bring them up in class
and come up with different ways to approach them. Then, I would spend
the end of the week implementing these solutions and reporting the results, good or bad,
the next week, and so on. But that was not the end of it. Alan went to the next step in making
this class as personalized and educational as possible by having email and phone contact
available practically 24/7, bringing in real world examples from his own previous experiences,
and even taking time from his personal life and attend a Symposium on project on a weekend.
Databases are a part of real world applications in all size businesses. With the
education that I got from Alan's class, I know that I am in an excellent position to
leverage my knowledge in projects to come.

Application Development Training
|
|
|
|
As with data management, these classes vary from general theory topics on all
areas of programming and application development to platform- and
problem-specific areas unique to your enterprise. A popular option is
to retain me to guide your team through the prototype phase of a real
project, where I guide and mentor them as they build a prototype of a useful
system. At the and of the process your team had learned new skills and
you have the first phase of a real application done.

Mentor Programs

|

"I had the privilege of working closely with Alan. Through this experience I
was exposed to the world of technology in finance, healthcare, law, and
education. The breadth and depth of the projects I apprenticed on ranged
from application design to E-Commerce and database integration, to hardware
and network design and implementation. Alan gave me confidence to take on
any project and the ability to find the right solution utilizing the right
technology."

Structured Monitoring
|
|
This service is much like the education and training described above, but
on a smaller scale and less formal. You can retain me for long periods of
time to provide you or members of your organization with guidance and advice
on all areas of IT, the field of Computer Science, and the consulting profession.
We'll talk by phone and e-mail regularly, and meet in person when it's mutually
convenient.

Informal Mentoring
|
|
I love teaching, and I'm always working to further Computer Science and Information
Technology education.
This informal mentoring program is free to anyone who wants to chat about
IT topics via e-mail. I make no guarantees about my availability on a
consistent basis, as I have formal clients to serve and classes to teach, but I will do my best
to help, and even more importantly, exchange ideas, with all who wish
to engage. Send me an e-mail to join up.
